At the old site of the RAF Alconbury airfield something new is taking off; an airfield that had most notoriety during the cold war, and has a long established history dating back to World War ll. Where once bombers and spy planes found a home, business and commerce are the new tenants. The whole site is just enormous, and you get a real perspective when you stand at the northern most end and look away in the distance to the water tower at Tesco, Huntingdon.
Two years ago, parts of the whole site were awarded Enterprise Zone status by the Government, which gives business incentives to establish within the Zone, such as reduced business rates over a set period and good connectivity to superfast broadband.
The site owners, Urban and Civic have entered into an agreement with the principal councils and the Local Enterprise Partnership to ensure that higher value jobs are delivered on the site with businesses such as research and development and clean tech for example.
Huntingdonshire District Council has played a lead role in this process throughout, and I have taken a lead role not only in my own council but on the Board of Directors on the Local Enterprise Partnership.
These are truly exciting times for this area and the first incubator unit has not only been planned, but delivered on the site. If you drive past the old Alconbury airfield entrance, you will see this innovative and modern building that has been built to a very high specification, set in a new and polished boulevard setting.
The site is getting some international attention now as one of the biggest strategic brown field sites in Europe. There are currently live enquiries moving to lease negotiations for new business on the site, and it is envisaged that up to 8000 new jobs will be created over the next 15-20 years.
This not only means jobs and security for our future here in Huntingdonshire, but also recognition by Government as the most important Enterprise Zone in the East of England.
Huntingdonshire is open for business and opportunity; this is where it s truly happening.
